The dollar sign in an excel cell allow you to fix either row
or column or both of them on any cell reference by preceding the column or row
with dollar sign
Before Column :
and in cell B1 there is simple Function which is (=A1 ) and we dragged this
function to row 10 like we studied before in lesson 20
Before Column :
$A2 this
fix column A if you copy the cell or function to another one or if you drag the function like we
studied before in lesson 20
Before Row :
A$2 this
fix row 2 if you copy the cell or function to another one or if you drag the
function like we studied before in lesson 20
We take a very simple to illustrate EXCEL Dollar Sign :
First : How to Fix Row using Dollar Sign ?
The tow figures below show sequence in column A from row 1 to 10
The figure below show the formulas in cells
In Cell C1 we write the function using Dollar Sign to fix
the row 1 (=A$1)
And drag the function
to row 10 , we notice that the row number doesn’t change with auto fill , as this figure illustrate .
and the result will be repeating the function =A$1 ,
Second : How to Fix column using Dollar Sign ?
As the we do in fixing row , we do the same in fixing column
,
The figure below show sequence form 1 to 5 in Row 1 ,
We write simple function in row 2 which is =A1 and drag it to
column E
We notice that the values of the column change with auto
fill process ,
In Cell A3 we write the same function in A2 but we preceding
the value of column A with ($) dollar sing , it will be (=$A3 )
And then we drag it
to column E , we notice that the value of column is fixed ,
The last figure shows the final result of using Dollar Sign
to fix column
we can also use $ to fix values in more complicated functions
